Schools and university

Build the campus. Set the tuition.

Education in The City is a path each resident walks, from elementary school to a degree. You build every step of it, decide what it costs, and your economy depends on how well you do.

The path through school

What a resident needs at each stage, and what it unlocks.

1

School

Elementary, middle and high schools, each with its own size, price and number of pupils. Children with no school in reach are unhappy. School gives a diploma.

2

College or university

Adults with a diploma can study for a degree, at the public city college or at a private university.

3

A better job

Office jobs need a diploma, and the better-paid ones need a degree. Graduates fill your office towers.

Public or private: your call

There are two ways to offer a degree, and you can run both.

  • City college: public and cheap.
  • Private university: you set the tuition. It can earn its keep, but a high price puts it out of reach.
  • School fees: set in the budget window, along with college and university tuition.

Higher charges make people less happy, so the price of a semester is a real decision.

A campus you assemble

A college or university starts with its main hall. Each campus building you add nearby gives it more places, for any college or university within 20 blocks.

Places to learn

Lecture hall, library, science building and music building.

Places to live

Dormitory, sorority house and fraternity house.

Campus life

Student union, the quad and an athletics building.

Why it matters to the city

Offices have their own demand, separate from shops and industry, and it only rises when the city has educated people to hire.

  • No graduates, no offices: office zones stay empty without people who hold a diploma or a degree.
  • Education raises happiness: it is one of the things every resident's happiness moves with.
  • The planner tells you: when people are out of work for want of a diploma, the City Planner says so.
